How Much Does SEO Cost in Michigan?

SEO for a Michigan small business usually costs $500 to $5,000 per month. Most independent consultants charge $1,000 to $3,000 per month, small agencies charge $2,000 to $7,500, and a one-time SEO audit runs $750 to $2,500. What you pay depends on three things: how competitive your industry is, how many cities you want to rank in, and how much work your website needs before it can compete.

I'm Jake Lett, an independent SEO consultant in Clinton Township. I put real numbers on this page because "it depends" is a useless answer when you're trying to budget. Below is what drives the price, a calculator to estimate yours, and where a consultant fits versus an agency.

My own plans sit in the consultant range: a $1,000 audit and roadmap, $1,000 per month advisory for teams that do their own work, and $2,000 to $3,000 per month when I handle the work end to end. Everything is month-to-month. See the full breakdown on my SEO consulting page.

Three things that move the price

Competition. Ranking a plumber in a small town is very different from ranking a personal injury lawyer in Detroit. More competition means more content, more links, and more time — so a higher monthly cost.

How many areas you target. One city is cheaper than a whole county, which is cheaper than statewide. Each area needs its own optimized page and local signals, so reach scales the cost.

Your website's starting point. If your site is slow, hard to crawl, or thin on content, some of the early budget goes to fixing that before rankings can move. A modern, fast site gets to results faster and cheaper.

Consultant or agency: where your money goes

An agency retainer usually covers a salesperson, an account manager, and a junior specialist who does the hands-on work. A consultant's fee buys time from the experienced person directly. For most Michigan small businesses spending under $5,000 a month, a consultant puts more of the budget into actual SEO instead of overhead. If you need a large team running many channels at once, an agency may fit better. Here's how I work as an independent consultant.
